The Republic of Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka and India. With a population of approximately 400,000 inhabitants, the country is made up of 1,190 coral islands, which are divided into 26 major groups of islands known as Atolls.
These Atolls stretch 820 kilometers from north to south and 120 kilometers from east to west. The local population inhabits some 200 of these islands, with 110 islands operating exclusively (one-island-one-resort) as resort islands.
